Two Foundational Concepts
- You are uniquely, individually, fearfully and wonderfully made in God’s image.
- God wants to meet you where you are.
In the video introduction, Dr. J. L. Miller mentioned the book, Sacred Pathways, by Gary Thomas. This book explores the idea that God meets Christians in various ways depending on their varied personalities and backgrounds. Thomas calls these varied ways, “sacred pathways.” Miller mentions that God meets a lot of people in ways that go well beyond the formula, “Get up, have your devotions, pray, and then go about your business.”
In his book, Thomas argues that there is not a “one-size-fits-all” formula for how we most easily worship God. Instead, each person may have different “pathways” that help them draw near to God in the most meaningful way.
Thomas outlines nine sacred pathways or spiritual temperaments:
- Naturalists - These individuals feel closest to God when they are outside in nature. A walk in the woods, gardening, or simply sitting by a stream can be spiritual experiences for them.
- Sensates - Sensates connect with God through their senses. They might be deeply moved by art, music, liturgy, or even the physical settings of a worship space.
- Traditionalists - Tradition, ritual, and symbols are important to these individuals. They are drawn to liturgical practices, regular devotional habits, and historical church practices.
- Ascetics - These individuals connect with God in solitude and simplicity. For them, being alone in a quiet place, away from distractions, can be a profound spiritual experience.
- Activists - Activists feel closest to God when fighting injustice and working to right wrongs. They are energized by their faith in action, standing against evil in the world.
- Caregivers - For caregivers, they encounter God most deeply when they are caring for and serving others, seeing acts of compassion and service as acts of worship.
- Enthusiasts - Enthusiasts connect with God through celebration and mystery. They enjoy vibrant worship experiences, spiritual retreats, and are open to the more miraculous and supernatural aspects of faith.
- Contemplatives - Contemplatives have a deep adoration for God and seek a deep, intimate relationship with Him. Their connection is often through adoration, deep meditation, and love.
- Intellectuals - These individuals are most drawn to God through their minds. They love to study Scripture, theology, and the intellectual aspects of faith, often finding God through understanding and discovery.
Which one or ones do you think you are? You can explore this question in the Practice for this Lesson.
