Synoptic Gospels

Completion requirements

The first 3 Gospels are called Synoptic Gospels.

Matthew, Mark and Luke are primarily historical biographies/ topical narratives of the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. They are known as the synoptic gospels. The word” Synoptic” comes from 2 Greek words which mean… to see together.

The reason for this classification is because these three Gospels give an account of the same events in Jesus’ life. Broadly speaking, their material is the same and the arrangement is the same.

It is possible to set them down in parallel columns to compare each of them to each other.

The Gospel of John is called “The supplementary gospel”. It is not one of the synoptic Gospels.

John was written 30 years after the other Gospels were written.
