Understanding Jesus’ earthly timeline helps to contextualize the New Testament and its teachings. The story begins with the Gospels, which narrate Jesus’ birth, life, death, and resurrection.
The Gospels of Matthew and Luke provide accounts of Jesus’ miraculous birth to the Virgin Mary in Bethlehem. Jesus’ early life was spent in Nazareth, and aside from a single episode of him in the temple at the age of twelve, not much is known about this period.
At approximately 30 years old, Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist, marking the beginning of his public ministry. Over the next three years, Jesus traveled throughout regions of Galilee, Samaria, and Judea, preaching about the Kingdom of God, performing miracles, and gathering disciples.
The Gospels recount Jesus’ last week in Jerusalem, leading up to his crucifixion. This week is commonly referred to as the Passion Week, encompassing significant events such as the Last Supper, Jesus’ arrest, trial, crucifixion, and burial. The Gospels conclude with the resurrection of Jesus on the third day after His death and His subsequent appearances to His disciples.
After his resurrection, Jesus spent forty days with his disciples, instructing them before ascending to heaven. This event marks the transition to the Book of Acts, which chronicles the apostles’ works in building the early church, led by the Holy Spirit. The New Testament concludes with John’s writings, including the Book of Revelation, believed by most scholars to be among the last New Testament writings, offering a prophetic vision of the end times.
