Key Takeaways

  • Personal Connections Matter: Just as Jesus took the time to engage with individuals personally, camp leaders are positioned to make significant impacts by connecting with campers one-on-one.
  • Increased Need for Adult Influence: Today, more adult influencers are required to connect meaningfully with each young person, highlighting the importance of every interaction at camp.

In our first lesson, Rev. Canney explores the profound impact of personal connection—mirroring the way Jesus reached out to individuals like the woman at the well and Zacchaeus. Rev. Canney explains how, at camp, we are afforded unique opportunities to make each camper feel seen and valued, just as Jesus did.

Consider, again, the story of Zacchaeus in Luke 19:1-10. Jesus notices Zacchaeus, a tax collector despised by many, in a sycamore tree and chooses to engage with him. This simple interaction ultimately transforms Zacchaeus' life. This illustrates the power of being seen and acknowledged. Do you know or have a similar story of where a small gesture returned significant dividends? What would it look like for you or your staff to make each camper feel noticed and valued? What changes might occur in a camper's life from such interactions?

Rev. Canny shared that, today, people are seeking connections without even realizing it. At camp, we are able to provide what they're searching for – often by simply recognizing them. He mentioned that while it would (at one time) take one adult to connect with as many as five campers, “it now takes five adults to connect with one person.” Given this change, we can begin to understand why being intentional is so important.

Summary

The essence of Camp Ministry lies not just in the planned activities but in the moments of personal connection. Being truly seen can alter the trajectory of a person's life. As Camp leaders and staff, you are encouraged to seek out these impactful one-on-one interactions, fostering an environment where every camper feels valued and understood.

As we progress through this course, remember that the simplest gestures often hold the most weight. Engaging deeply can set the stage for transformational experiences.
