Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.
Matthew 28:19-20
The earliest Christians met together from the very beginning. There were no church buildings so they mostly met in people’s houses. Some Jewish synagogues probably met in the central open spaces of villages. At Philippi, some Christians met near the city’s river (Acts 16:13). When we get together in small groups to worship, fellowship, and study, we are doing what the New Testament church did.
The number of reasons for Christians to meet together is as many as the reasons we gather to worship on a Sunday morning. Why host a Bible study? As Pastor Fetterhoff says, “God designed us to grow in community.” Discipleship is the core instruction of the Great Commission. “By hosting a Bible study, you are taking part in the Great Commission.”
Hosting a Bible study is one of the most obvious ways to participate in the discipleship of God’s people. We grow as we dig into God’s word. We hold each other accountable. We sharpen each other. We grow in relationship with each other, helping us to love each other. People can come to Christ as they fellowship with us. Most of all, we can give God the worship that is due him.
We all have different giftings (1 Cor. 12). As Pastor Fetterhoff says, “lean into your giftings.” There are many different approaches to a gathering as there are different people. Use the gifts that God has given you and the Holy Spirit will do the rest.
