Overview of the Poetic Books

Completion requirements

The Poetic or Wisdom Books of the Old Testament are unique in their literary form and content. They are Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and the Song of Solomon (also called the Song of Songs).

Job

grapples with the problem of suffering and the mystery of God's providence. It challenges the traditional wisdom that equates prosperity with righteousness and suffering with sin.

The Psalms

are a collection of prayers and songs expressing a wide range of human emotions—from praise and thanksgiving to lament and confession.

Proverbs

offers practical wisdom for living, focusing on topics like integrity, diligence, self-control, and respect for God—the foundation of wisdom.

Ecclesiastes

reflects on the seeming futility of life and the pursuit of meaning. It concludes that fearing God and keeping His commands is what truly matters.

The Song of Solomon (or Song of Songs)

tic celebration of love, filled with rich imagery and emotional depth.
