Completion requirements

What might a Christian worldview have to say about entertainment, both what we might create and what we might consume?

God is creator, and we are like him.

God is the master architect and designer of the universe. Clearly, God is creative beyond anything we could possibly imagine. An artist once said, “Man is most like God when he creates” (women too). 

In that sense, it can give glory to God when someone creates art, including creating music and movies. The medium of art and entertainment, by default, glorifies God because it imitates his creativity. It is only when the medium is used with inappropriate content or purpose that it comes into question.

Our sinfulness can lead us to create sinful things.

Because of the human propensity to sin, it is predictable that some art and entertainment will come to express evil impulses. It is inevitable that some art and entertainment will be used to move others in the wrong direction or to fill our minds with tempting thoughts and feelings.

Although the King James Version probably takes the verse in a different direction than its original meaning, its rendering of Psalm 101:3 is not untrue: “I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes.” Philippians 4:8 puts it this way:

Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things.

If we know that watching something will cause us to be tempted or will reinforce sinful impulses or will corrupt our thinking, we should avoid it. If you love God, why would you do something that could undermine your love of God? It’s basic common sense.
