When to Refer

Completion requirements

A referral isn't just about passing someone off to a specialist; it's a critical part of your supportive role. You are often the first level of help someone seeks. However, as the video emphasized, there comes a time when the circle of support needs to broaden. Recognizing this is crucial.

Signs and Symptoms

There are several indicators that someone needs professional help.  Here are several to watch for:

  • Persistent Anxiety or Depression: Emotional states that don't improve or worsen over time.
  • Inability to Cope: Struggles with daily responsibilities, indicating a deeper issue.
  • Talk of Self-Harm or Harm to Others: Any mention of suicidal or harmful thoughts requires immediate professional attention.
  • Severe Mood Swings: Extreme emotional highs and lows that interfere with daily life.
  • Other Indicators: As touched upon in the video, also watch out for unexplained headaches, back pain, aching muscles, and stomach pain.

The Benefits of Broadening Support

As Dr. Lee mentioned, the benefits of expanding support through referral include new insights, shared supportive responsibility, and an opportunity for your friendship to return to a non-crisis state.
