The Path of True Worship and Transformation

Completion requirements

When we're not living in a right relationship with God, we seek the things of the world or things outside of that relationship to fill the void.

- Rev. Billy Robel

Embracing Our True Purpose: Worship

At the core of our struggle with addiction is a fundamental misdirection of our worship. Romans 12:1-2 calls us to offer our bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God, which is our true and proper worship. This lesson underscores that addiction is a form of misplaced worship, where substances or behaviors are prioritized over our relationship with God. Reflect on what has been taking the place of God in your life and how redirecting your focus toward Him can fill the void that addiction cannot.

Scriptures for Reflection:

  • Romans 12:1-2: Encourages us to live lives that are holy and pleasing to God as our spiritual act of worship.
  • Revelation 4:11: Reminds us of our created purpose to glorify God, who alone is worthy of our worship and praise.

Overcoming Shame with God's Love

Galatians 2:20 speaks to the transformative power of Christ's love for us, a love so profound that it seeks to redeem us from the depths of our guilt and shame. Shame often binds us to our past, but God's love offers a path to redemption and a new identity in Christ. Acknowledge the shame and guilt you've felt, but recognize that God hates the sin, not the sinner. His plan and purpose for your life go beyond your past mistakes. As Billy shared, “He hasn’t given up on you.”

True Change through the Holy Spirit

Romans 6:6 reveals the promise of liberation from sin through Christ's sacrifice, emphasizing that we are no longer slaves to sin but freed through death to our old selves. We cannot achieve this freedom alone, but it is a gift of grace through the Holy Spirit. Reflect on the areas where you need the Holy Spirit to bring about change that you've been unable to accomplish alone.

Turn to God in Humility

2 Chronicles 7:14 calls God's people to humility, prayer, and repentance as the pathway to forgiveness and healing. Humility is a cornerstone of recovery, acknowledging our need for God's intervention. Consider the areas of your life where pride has hindered your relationship with God. How can you humble yourself before Him, seeking His face and turning from sin?

Practical Steps for Deepening Your Relationship with God

  • Daily Worship: Integrate worship into your daily routine, whether through music, prayer, or reading scripture, to keep your focus on God.
  • Scripture Memorization: Commit to memorizing scriptures that speak to your identity in Christ and God's power to transform your life.
  • Community Engagement: If you have not already done so, connect with a faith community that supports your journey, offering accountability, encouragement, and shared worship experiences.

Rev. Robel invites us to realign our hearts towards the worship of God, recognizing that our deepest fulfillment comes from living by His will. As we confront the shame and guilt of our past, let us embrace the transformative power of the Holy Spirit, seeking God with humble hearts ready for His healing touch. Remember, your journey towards recovery is also a journey towards rediscovering your purpose and identity in Christ.
