The Benefits of Structure

In the video lecture, Dr. Bence described the organizational structure of the early Societies. Wesley was very organized: he devised the organization of his societies across the British Isles and regularly visited them.

In the various regional societies, he delegated responsibilities to lay preachers, individuals who were trained, examined, and endorsed by Wesley himself. Each society had subgroups made up of individuals at different levels of spiritual maturity. For example, there were smaller classes for seekers and new converts. 

For those desiring to “go on to perfection,” Wesley organized even smaller groups called bands where spiritual disciplines were developed and enforced. Laypersons who were singled out for leadership roles were assigned to select societies where reading books and attending conferences developed their skills. Penitential societies were available for those seeking to overcome addictive habits, especially alcoholism. All of these activities in the Methodist societies presumed that members would be faithful attenders and adherents of their own local congregations, whether the Church of England or the numerous independent and congregational churches that were available.

Now do a little research online about Wesley’s societies, classes, and bands. Take notes as you search the way that Wesley organized the movement. You may cautiously use AI tools to research, although do not use them to generate your post or any assignments. Use their information critically, as they have been known to invent things.
