In this first foray into disciple-making, I took the time to reflect on the importance of Bible reading with my disciple. Of opening the Word with an expectant heart, like David encourages us to do in the Psalms. After reading a verse, I then asked what it meant to my disciple, what they felt it meant to them. They answered that it did not necessarily particularly pertain to them on that day - HOORAY! This was a wonderful segway to explain the neccesity it is to study the Bible not as we interpret it through our modern eyes, but as it was intended to be interpreted by the original audience. It offered the opportunity for me to discuss the importance of reading the Bible in community, showing how understanding the seemingly unrelatable portion of Scripture can become incredibly transformative if its original, almost objective intent is discussed. I also managed to touch on the role of the pastor in this discussion, explaining that yes, education is important, but a pastor's job is to equip and train his flock to be able to read, interpret and apply the Bible and its truths in their everyday lives, and through community.
