Lesson 2 Reflection Activities

Completion requirements
  1. Consider what your church governance meeting consists of. Honestly assess how much time you spend a) discussing the unified goals of the church, b) praying for wisdom and discernment, and c) moving towards being a high-performance team together. How much time is spent on d) giving reports, e) micro-managing problems or challenges, or f) resolving disputes? Take a moment to make a list of each of these items. Think about the last meeting that you had, and write down an approximate number of minutes that you spent on each item.

Now, in a second column, write down what you consider to be the ideal amount of time you would like to spend on each of those items.

What practical steps can you take to move from the first column to the second?

  2. In order to practice mutual voluntary submission, church boards need to annually assess items that they have led, that they will hand o to others to manage. Make a list of a maximum of ten items that your board wants to accomplish this year. Which of these items can you foresee handing over at the end of the year so that you can populate new items on the list for next year? Which items would be the hardest to hand over? Which items would be the most important to hand over? Which items are dominating your time so that you cannot focus on other items?

  3. Think about the phrase “Leadership Discernment Community”. Think about the word in that phrase that stood out to you as something you do well. List some tangible factors that show your success in that area.

Now consider the word that could use the most growth and development in your life. List some tangible steps that you, personally, can take to foster and develop that aspect of helping your board become a Leadership Discernment Community.

Finally, consider the word that you left out. How important is this area of leadership to you? Who are the people on your board that have strengths in this final word that isn’t an area of focus for you? If there are none, then perhaps this word is the true area of focus that needs to be addressed as a church board.
