Assignment

Interpretation: Genesis 1-3

Completion requirements

In preparation for this assignment, read Chapter 1, “Holiness in the Pentateuch” in the textbook, Holiness: A Biblical, Historical, and Systematic Theology (pp. 7-39).

Genesis 1-3 is the clear starting point for any biblical discussion of humanity’s default and then fallen state. Read the following verses, especially from these chapters:

  • Genesis 1:26-27
  • Genesis 2:7-8, 15-25
  • Genesis 3:14-23

Now, informed by the passages, your reading, and any additional research you might add, answer the following questions.

  • Based on the train of thought in Genesis 1:26-27, what might you induce to be the primary dimensions of the image of God? How is this similar or different from the expanded theological concept of the image of God you are learning in this module?
  • How do you see the image of God reflected in God’s charge to Adam and Eve in Genesis 2 as well as in their capacity to sin in Genesis 3? How would you say that Adam and Eve could sin in Genesis 3 when they did not have a sinful nature?
  • How do you see the image of God being corrupted as you reach the end of Genesis 3?

This assignment is worth 60 points.
