Assignment

How Messed Up?

Completion requirements

As you read the chapters in Felker-Jones’ book, you may have noticed that a theme that comes up several times is the problem of sin clouding our understanding of God. Someone like Karl Barth went so far as to think we can hardly arrive at important truths about God using our reason or experience.

But lest we think the Bible solves all these problems, we use our minds as we try to understand the Bible itself! If sin clouds our understanding in general, wouldn’t that conundrum also apply to our attempt to understand Scripture? As you read, some think we can only understand revelation if God “unveils” it for us or if the Spirit opens our eyes.

In 600-1000 words, present your current thoughts on this problem. How can we know anything about God? Do you think the Wesleyan Quadrilateral has any validity? What is the role of the Holy Spirit in illuminating our understanding, including our understanding of Scripture? Feel free to do additional research and to consider your current thoughts tentative.
