In this exercise, we will create a basic yet comprehensive profile of a hypothetical organization that will serve as the foundation for subsequent strategic planning exercises.

Instructions

Step 1: Choose an Organization Type (10 minutes)

  • Begin by selecting the type of organization you wish to focus on. It can be a business (e.g., a technology startup, a retail store), a non-profit organization, a governmental agency, or any other entity.
  • Briefly note down the organization's sector, size, and general nature.

Step 2: Define the Organization's Background (20 minutes)

  • Describe the hypothetical organization's history. Consider when and why it was founded, its growth trajectory, and any significant milestones.
  • Keep this section concise but informative, laying a foundation that explains the organization's current position.

Step 3: Articulate the Mission and Core Values (20 minutes)

  • Develop a clear mission statement for your organization. This statement should capture the organization's purpose and its primary objectives.
  • Define three to five core values representing the organization's ethical and operational principles.

Step 4: Outline the Current Market Position (20 minutes)

  • Describe the organization's current position in the market. This might include its target audience, main products or services, primary competitors, and recent market trends impacting the organization.
  • Highlight any specific challenges or opportunities the organization is currently facing.

Step 5: Document Your Profile (10 minutes)

  • Compile the information from the previous steps into a cohesive organizational profile. This document should be one page at maximum.
  • Ensure the profile is clear and concise, which will be used in subsequent course activities.

Step 6: Reflection (10 minutes)

  • Reflect on the process of creating this profile. Consider the following questions:
    • What challenges did you face in defining the mission and values?
    • How did you decide on the organization's market position?
    • How might this profile serve as a foundation for strategic planning?
