Practice: Applying Scripture

Pick a passage from Scripture that is particularly of interest to you. If you are thinking about working toward a badge, you may want to use the passage that you have been studying in previous lessons. In this final lesson, you are going to use the tools above to exercise your skills at appropriating the passage for today.

You may not have studied this passage in great detail yet. Even if you have been working on the same passage throughout this course, there may be an interpretive question you have not yet explored deeply. Pick a truth from the passage that you want to apply in this assignment.

• Pray! Pray for insight. Pray for the Holy Spirit to guide your thinking as you explore this application.
• Do some (additional?) exegetical work on the passage so that you have at least a preliminary sense of what the passage might have meant.
• Are there points of continuity or discontinuity between that aspect of the paragraph and today? What are the broader principles involved? 
• What has the community of faith throughout the ages had to say on the question? What is the church today saying about it?
