From time to time, our denomination considers it wise and necessary to make a public statement about the stance The Wesleyan Church takes on a contemporary issue. At the current time, we have made ten such statements available to the public. As a student who might be considering joining The Wesleyan Church or perhaps seeking ordination in our body, it would be well for you to read all ten statements.
However, for this assignment, read five positions that are currently topics in the media and in social settings.
Read the following position statements:
- A) Homosexuality
- B) Sanctity of Life
- C) Gender Identity and Expression
- D) Immigration
- E) Creation Care
As you read these statements, consider which of the following options best describes our response to what The Wesleyan Church affirms:
- I can give my full support to the statement as written.
- I can give qualified support to the statement but would like to see it strengthened in the following way.
- I can give qualified support to the statement but would like to see it less stringent in the following way.
- I cannot give support to this statement as it is written and would want to see it changed in the following way before I could express even qualified support.
In a few sentences for EACH of these position statements, identify the number corresponding to your level of support. For any you would want to see changed, write a sentence or two about your concern and indicate how you would want to see the position altered to better align with your present views. (It is assumed that you would want to see some adjustments on at least one or two of these statements.)
