Journal: The Spirit in Scripture

Completion requirements

In previous assignments, you have looked at several key Scriptures about God the Father and Jesus the Son. In this module, we want to look at some key passages about the third person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit. Doing research will help you unfold the depth of each passage.

Look up the following Scriptures. Try not to simply read the verse alone but in the context of the passage where it is. Write at least a paragraph on each verse indicating what it teaches you about Christ while also noting any questions you might have about it. You can also add additional Scriptures that inform your understanding of the Holy Spirit.

  • John 14:16-17 - “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.”
  • John 16:13-14 - “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will glorify me, for he will receive from me and will make it known to you.”
  • Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
  • 1 Corinthians 12:4-11 - “There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord... All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.”
  • Romans 8:26-27 - “In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.”
  • Galatians 5:22-23 - “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”
  • Ephesians 1:13-14 - “And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.”
  • Acts 2:1-4 - “When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages as the Spirit enabled them.”
  • 2 Corinthians 3:17-18 - “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.”
  • Titus 3:5 - “He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit.”
