Assignment

God in Scripture

Completion requirements

Christian theology aims to gather the full counsel of God from Scripture and systematize it into a holistic understanding. For this reason, we will be engaging key scriptures on topics of theology throughout the course. Doing research will help you unfold the depth of each passage.

In this lesson, look up the following Scriptures. Try not to simply read the verse alone but in the context of the passage where it is. Write at least a paragraph on each verse indicating what it teaches you about God as well as noting any questions you might have about it. You can also add additional Scriptures that inform your understanding of God.

  • Genesis 1:1 - “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”
  • Exodus 3:14 - “God said to Moses, 'I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”
  • Psalm 23:1-4 - “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul…”
  • Psalm 139 - “Where can I go from your Spirit? … You created my inmost being…”
  • Isaiah 6:1-3 - “In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple…”
  • John 3:16 - “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
  • John 4:24 - “God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”
  • Romans 1:18 - “For the wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and wickedness.”
  • Romans 5:8 - “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
  • 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 - “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles…”
  • Hebrews 4:15-16 - “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.”
