Practice: Mini Discovery Bible Session

Completion requirements

Conduct a Discovery Bible session with a small group of friends or family, using the principles and structure learned in the course. This hands-on experience aims to familiarize you with leading a discussion, managing group dynamics, and applying the Discovery Bible Study (DBS) process in a real-world context.

Instructions

  1. Preparation (30 minutes):
    1. Select a Passage: Choose a short but impactful scripture passage for the session. Consider starting with a parable of Jesus or a passage that inspired you.
    2. Review the DBS Process: Briefly review the steps of the Discovery Bible Process, ensuring you're comfortable with the flow and types of questions used in the discussion.
    3. Invite Participants: Reach out to a small group of friends or family members who would be open to participating in this session. Explain the purpose and estimated time commitment.
  2. Setting the Scene (15 minutes):
    1. Find a comfortable and quiet space where your group can sit together without distractions.
    2. Provide each participant a copy of the scripture passage, either printed or through a shared digital document.
    3. Open the session with a brief introduction to the Discovery Bible Process and its goals for personal and communal spiritual growth.
  3. Facilitating the Session (1 hour):
    1. Read the Passage Together: Start by reading the scripture passage aloud, possibly asking two different participants to read it to provide varied perspectives.
    2. Retell the Passage: Encourage each person to retell the passage in their own words, fostering engagement and understanding.
    3. Discuss the Discovery Questions: Lead the group through the Discovery Bible Process questions, encouraging open and respectful dialogue. Remember to focus on what the passage reveals about God, its implications for personal life, and how it can be shared with others.
    4. Reflect on the Experience: After discussing the passage, invite feedback on the process. Ask how it felt to engage with scripture in this way and any insights gained from the discussion.
  4. Debrief and Reflection (15 minutes):
    1. After the session, reflect on the experience as the facilitator. Consider what went well, what could be improved, and how participants responded to the process.
    2. Think about how this experience might translate to a workplace setting. Identify any adjustments you need to make to accommodate a different audience or environment.
