  • Lesson 1: Genesis: In the Beginning

A story is not a story without some problem or situation to be addressed. The human story is no different. Genesis 1-3 tells us the situation in which we find ourselves in the human story. God created humanity to have perfect relationships with him, each other, ourselves, and the creation. But sin has brought brokenness into all four relationships. The rest of Genesis not only illustrates our human brokenness in powerful terms; it shows the beginnings of hope as God makes his first moves toward the redemption of humanity in Christ Jesus.

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

    1. Articulate the overall story of the Old Testament and its key events.
    2. Describe how God created humanity in his image and how sin has profoundly disrupted the harmony of our relationships with God, other people, ourselves, and the world.
    3. Explain how the story of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob sets into motion God’s plan to redeem humanity through the people of Israel.
