  • Lesson 2: Observing the Big Picture

In this second Lesson, we begin the task of observing the biblical text. Our goal is to hear what it has to say rather than to read our own preconceptions into it. We will spend this Lesson and the next learning skills of observation. In Lesson 2, we will explore how to observe the “big picture,” the flow of larger sections of text and even whole books. Then in Lesson 3, we will focus in on how to observe the text in its details.

This lesson aims to equip you to:

    1. Become acquainted with the content of a book of the Bible or a section of a book.
    2. Outline a book of the Bible or a section of a book.
    3. Identify the relationships between sections of or in a book of the Bible.
    4. Ask insightful questions about your observations of the big picture of a book of the Bible.

    Steps in Observation

    1. Pray!
    2. Read the text through two or three times, at least one time in one sitting.
    3. Give a title to each chapter, maybe write a brief sentence capturing it.
    4. Create an outline.
    5. Identify relationships between the parts of your outline.
    6. Ask who, what, where, when, how, and why questions.
